Tips to avoid an accident when driving around large trucks

On Behalf of | Jun 19, 2023 | Truck Accidents

Driving around large trucks can be intimidating due to their size and limited visibility. While this is true, when you know how to stay safe, it can help avoid accidents.

Here are some key guidelines to keep in mind when sharing the road with large trucks:

Maintain a safe distance

When driving near a large truck, maintain a safe distance to allow the driver enough space to maneuver safely. Stay at least four to six seconds behind the truck. This provides time for both vehicles to react to any potential hazards.

Avoid blind spots

You likely know what a blind spot is (also called “no-zones” on big trucks). It’s crucial to avoid lingering in these areas. The most problematic areas around big trucks are the rear and sides. However, a good tip to remember is that the driver can’t see you if you can’t see the truck’s side mirrors.

Use your turn signals

Always use your turn signals well in advance when changing lanes or merging near a large truck. Make sure you turn the signal on early. This will allow the truck driver to adjust to avoid causing an accident.

Pass carefully

If you must pass a truck, do it quickly and safely. Signal your intention, accelerate to an appropriate speed, and pass on the left side of the truck. Maintain a consistent speed and avoid lingering in the truck’s blind spot.

Be patient

Large trucks require more time and distance to stop or maneuver, especially in bad weather conditions. Be patient and avoid cutting in front of a truck too closely, allowing plenty of space for them to stop or slow down if needed.

By implementing these tips, you can enhance your safety when driving around large trucks. If you are involved in an accident, it is important to take steps to protect your legal rights.
