Family files lawsuit against company for fatal accident

Most people don't expect that going to work is going to end with them dying. Sadly, there are some instances in which an injury at the workplace can lead to someone's death. One family has filed a lawsuit in the Houston Division of the U.S. Court for the Southern District of Texas that alleges the gross negligence of Rangeline Tapping Services, Inc. led to a man's death.

The lawsuit alleges that the man sustained a crushing injury to his pelvis, blunt trauma to his chest and was struggling to breathe. The man was conscious while he was pinned under a water valve he was working on. He was taken to the hospital, where he died from blunt trauma and crushing injuries.

The man, who died on Sept. 4, 2012, was cleaning and painting two flanges/water valves on the exterior of Rangeline's facility when the fatal accident occurred. While he was doing this task, he was allegedly instructed to install metal caps with bolts on one end of each valve. The valves were lifted and placed upright using a truck crane operated by the company's owner. While the man was following those instructions, one of the valves tipped over and pinned him to the ground.

The lawsuit, which was filed on Feb. 24 by the man's family members, is seeking an undisclosed amount of damages. Anyone who lost a loved one in a workplace accident might have the right to seek compensation like this man's family chose to. Understanding your rights and responsibilities might help you if you decide to pursue compensation for your loved one's death.
