Mom dies, daughter injured in Texas accident

A suspected shoplifter who attempted to flee a store reportedly ran a red light and collided with a car, killing its driver and injuring a teenage passenger. The suspected shoplifter was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The collision happened in the early morning hours of Dec. 15 on Fairmont Parkway near Nations in Pasadena. Police say a department store security guard was pushed to the ground by a suspected shoplifter when he attempted to confront her as she was leaving the store. The woman fled the store, got into a white pickup truck and raced away. It is reported that minutes later she ran a right light and struck a Dodge Magnum on Fairmont Parkway. The driver of the Magnum, a mother, died at the scene. Her teenage daughter, a passenger in the car, was transported to a local hospital with hip injuries.

Police say the shoplifting suspect had apparently taken toys worth less than $50 from the department store before attempting to get away from the security guard. Authorities have not yet determined what charges she will face.

The death of a person killed in a fatal car accident may have a great impact on the lives of the deceased's loved ones. During the emotionally trying time immediately following the event, families are often faced with the costs and expenses related to the victim's final affairs. They may also need to attend to legal matters within strict time limits to protect future economic interests.

The dependents and loved ones of individuals killed in car accidents due to the negligence and reckless behavior of others may be able to seek compensation for their losses. An attorney might be able to initiate and pursue a civil wrongful death claim on their behalf.
