Fifty-car pile up in Beaumont results in numerous injuries

Heavy fog and holiday traffic ended in a 50-car pile up on Thanksgiving morning on Interstate 10 just outside of Beaumont, Texas. Authorities reported numerous injuries. Such a massive car accident is rare, but all accidents can have a huge impact on someone's life. A wreck like this will take a long time to sort out, but anyone who was injured should follow all the latest developments.

The chain reaction of accidents started at around 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving. A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety said that by 9:30 all lanes of I-10 had been closed. According to reports, heavy fog was present in most of the Houston area that morning. The spokeswoman said all initial indications point to the low visibility as the cause of the accident.

The spokeswoman also said that numerous injuries had been reported. The exact number wasn't stated, but she said that none of the injuries were expected to be life threatening.

It seems that authorities still don't have an exact reason for the crash, other than low visibility. When the cause is determined, it may be possible for the victims of the accident to seek compensation of their damages from the driver or drivers who were responsible.

But this is a good time to remind Houston motorists that just because a certain speed limit is posted it doesn't mean that you should always travel at or above that limit. When dangerous conditions such as fog set in, drivers need to travel at a speed that is safe enough for the conditions and no faster.
