People who are intoxicated or impaired can't react to the normal situations that occur on the roadways. This is one of the reasons why drunk driving is against the law. When people don't follow this law, horrible accidents can happen. One accident on Texas 71 just west of Bastrop that was allegedly caused by a drunk driver claimed the life of a man.
The man who died was stopped at a red light when the allegedly drunk female driver slammed into the back of his pickup truck. Two tractor-trailers were part of the crash. Both the alleged drunk driver's vehicle and the man's pickup truck caught on fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Two drivers were injured in the accident with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. They were taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge for medical care.
Because of she was allegedly drunk at the time of the fatal accident, the 28-year-old female driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. She was treated for injuries then taken to the Bastrop County jail. She posted $50,000 bond and was released from jail.
Two people were hurt, one person died and four vehicles were involved in an accident that likely could have been prevented if the woman hadn't allegedly gotten behind the wheel of her vehicle after a day of drinking. For the family of the man who died, anger, sorrow and grief are probably all going to be emotions they have to deal with as they move on without their loved one.
For anyone who has lost a loved one in a fatal accident, seeking closure is usually part of the grieving process. In an effort to seek that closure, some family members might opt to hold the at-fault driver accountable by seeking compensation for their loved one's death through the civil court system.
