Teenage boy miraculously survives deadly truck accident

The undersheriff with the McKinley County Sherriff's Office in New Mexico is calling a recent accident between a tractor-trailer and a car one of the most amazing things that he's ever seen. The accident he is referring to happened around 4:00 a.m. on May 5. According to sources, a 38-year-old woman, her 26-year-old boyfriend and the woman's 15-year-old son were driving from Vacaville, California to Houston, Texas to start a new life together. Authorities in near Gallup, New Mexico, say that the trio was almost half of the way into their 2,000 mile journey to Houston when a semi-truck struck the car from behind.

Authorities are not certain why, but they believe the car was traveling at a very slow rate of speed at the time of the crash. The woman was at the wheel of the car driving, while her boyfriend sat beside her in the passenger seat and the boy was asleep in the back seat. Suddenly, the impact from the 18-wheeler caused the car to go flipping end over end down Interstate 40, smashing the front end of the car and killing both the woman and her boyfriend. The accident spared the boy and left him with only minor injuries. The semi-truck caught fire after it veered off of the road and struck an embankment. The driver survived with smoke-inhalation injuries.

Police say that when they came upon the scene of the truck accident, they found a small car flipped over on its roof and the big rig's cab spewing flames. Authorities worked to find a sign-language interpreter for the boy, who is deaf, and eventually got him a plane ticket to his grandmother's house back in California.

This is a tragic accident. but so are most accidents involving tractor-trailers. Sometimes, people who are struck from behind by inattentive or poorly trained semi-truck operators can file lawsuits against those drivers and the companies they work for to recover lost wages, medical expenses and other damages.
