DUI charges in fatal freeway accident

A wrong-way accident on a Texas highway left one person dead and three others injured. Authorities say that it was a drunk driving accident and charged a 26-year-old woman with intoxication manslaughter.

The accident happened around midnight on the Katy Freeway on Oct. 15. Authorities say that the woman drove her silver Chevrolet Cavalier up the eastbound exit ramp of Interstate 10 near North Durham and onto the highway. Investigators say that she struck a blue Toyota Corolla continued on until she struck a motorcycle.

A 20-year-old woman riding as a passenger in the back seat of the Toyota was seriously injured in the accident. She was transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital by emergency personnel where she was pronounced dead. The motorcycle driver was transported to a hospital for treatment of a broken leg. Both the Toyota driver and the Chevrolet driver suffered from minor injuries.

EMS transported the Chevrolet driver to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. However, after she showed signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking at a nearby bar, police took her into custody and then to jail. The eastbound lanes of I-10 in the accident area were closed for about five hours for the accident investigation and clean-up.

When someone is injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver, they often face a loss of income at the same time that they have medical and rehabilitation bills. A personal injury lawyer could help to negotiate for a settlement to make up for the victim's accident-related expenses as well as for his or her pain and suffering. In addition, the lawyer could investigate to see if the case warrants punitive damages and pursue a claim for the full amount of the at-fault driver's insurance coverage.
