Houston man dies in possible alcohol-related crash

A 25-year-old Houston man died after an accident on Highway 59 North occurred in the early morning hours on Aug. 18. According to officers with the Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Division, a white Cadillac DeVille changed lanes and crossed the median, striking a truck. The impact caused the Cadillac to spin before striking a freeway shoulder divider.

The man, who was a rear seat passenger, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was announced dead. His identity has not been released. It is believed by the HPD that there were several others inside the vehicle at the time of the fatal accident, but two individuals allegedly fled the scene of the wreck. Officers also believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

If someone is killed as a result of a drunk driving accident, his or her surviving family members may be eligible to receive compensation and hold the driver who caused the accident responsible. This compensation, if awarded, can be used to help pay for any medical expenses, funeral costs, replace income that was lost, secure a financial future for the deceased individual's children, and mitigate pain and suffering. In many cases, however, the insurance company may attempt to settle with the family by offering them an amount that does not fully cover these costs.

Before the family ever talks to the insurance company, it is highly recommended that they speak to an experienced Houston attorney. The attorney may be able to maximize the compensation that is awarded through negotiations using the available evidence. In the rare instances that the insurance company refuses to settle, the attorney can create a strong case for the client to help them seek the compensation that they need to cover the expenses.
