Suspected drunk driver hits and kills pedestrian in Houston

Drunk drivers endanger everyone in the vicinity of their vehicles, including other drivers and pedestrians. Drunk driving accident victims have the right to seek compensation for their injuries, since accidents caused by drunk drivers could often have been avoided if the drivers acted more responsibly. A fatal auto accident in Houston earlier this month underscores the risks to the community that drunk drivers pose.

On Sept. 10 around 1 a.m., a 29-year-old man was driving south on the 7400 block of Scott near Lydia streets in south Houston when his car left the roadway, jumped the curb and barreled into a grassy median that framed the sidewalk. The car hit a 51-year-old female pedestrian who was walking on the grass. The silver Dodge Intrepid hit the woman and then dragged her a short distance. Sadly, she died at the scene from her injuries.

According to Houston police, the driver showed signs of intoxication. Police took him into custody under suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Charges had yet to be filed at the time of a local report.

A drunk driver adds a layer of complexity to an already complex auto-pedestrian accident that resulted in a pedestrian death. The family of the accident victim should pay close attention to the police investigation to see how alcohol consumption contributed to the collision. The investigation should reveal the driver's blood-alcohol level and then compare it to the maximums set by state law. Depending on the results of the investigation, the family may need legal representation to pursue a wrongful death case.
